The Gwent Archives, whose former name was Gwent Public Record Office, serves the areas of: Blanau Gwent County Borough; Caerphilly County Borough Council; Monmouthshire County Council; Newport City Council; Torfean County Borough Council. The documents had to be relocated to their new state of the art facility because the County Hall where they were being kept was being torn down.
Just like the history in which the archives encompass, the Gwent Archives have a history of their own. They were established in 1938 as the Monnouthshire Record Office. It served the county for which it was named. Local government reorganization in 1974 changed the areas that the office served and it became the Gwent County Record Office. More government changes in 1996 divided the county of Gwent into the areas it serves today.
This large facility has a mass amount of space for their preserved document collection and enough space to keep adding to their collection. They welcome ideas for documents to add to the collection. They have lecture rooms for learning how to use the facility. The facility also has its own in house conservation studio. You can watch experts repair and conserve the documents.
It is free to visit the archives and do your own research. They have expert staff members who are more than willing to answer any questions that you may have. There is a fee to have documents either printed for you or for you to take digital images of the documents. Experts from the conservation studio are also willing to meet with you to teach you how to repair and conserve your own special documents.
