They are open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 am to 5:00 pm, on Wednesdays from 9:15 am to 7:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:15 am to 12:15 pm. They are closed on Fridays. This office operates on the CARN (County Archives Research Network) ticket system.

The public record office has self-service Microfilm and Microfiche readers and printers. They provide computers to access the internet and CD-ROMs. They provide facilities for laptop computer use. They offer facilities for listening to sound recording and viewing videos, but you must book in advance.

The record office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland counties contain the archives of Leicestershire and Rutland county councils, Borough and City of Leicester, Quarter sessions, Petty sessions and other local courts, Poor law unions and workhouses, Archdeaconry of Leicester including wills and inventories from 1496, probate registry, Anglican and non-conformist churches, Leicestershire Regiment and other military bodies, landed estates and families, solicitors, manufacturers, and other commercial businesses and schools, clubs, societies, and other organizations. They also provide census returns for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland from 1841 to 1901, enclosure and tithe maps, ordnance survey maps, books, magazines and leaflets on local people, places and subjects, commercial directories and electoral registers, local newspapers, works by local authors, illustrations and information on local people and places, photographs and local films and videos and oral history tapes and other sound recordings.

The record office also has Exhibitions and Events. Some of the past Exhibitions include World War Ancestry Guide, Projections from the Past – digitising glass lantern slides, Urban Photography, Documenting Nazi persecution of Christian churches in Pre-war Germany: a new resource in the Record office, Women who shaped Leicester’s history – The Forgotten Story, Tracing your Family History Workshop and Planning Leicester. Some of the current Exhibitions include The Life and Times of Richard III, 500 years of Wyggeston’s Hospital, The Noel Family of Exton and A Healthy Start – Bond Street Maternity Hospital.
